UNC Chapel Hill Bynum Hall

About the Project

Built in 1905 as the original gymnasium and pool house for UNC Chapel Hill, this project re-purposed the basement level for the University Counsel’s office and provided a new ADA stair/ elevator/ conference tower at the rear. This was a $4.SM project that involved new HVAC for the building. ADA upgrades. Asbestos abatement, and construction within an occupied building. The design worked to maintain the historic nature of the building, and blend in with similar detailing. Strategic ductwork design and clearances in the basement coordinated with the structure to provide 8′ head height clearance at crossings. The original pool, which had been buried previously, provided similar challenges with a new structure that the design team successfully coordinated with the new construction.
